Ethics are principles of conduct governing an individual or professional. Among fine jewelers, this is symbolized by membership in the American Gem Society - a professional trade association dedicated to the vigilant protection of the buying public through maintenance of fine business standards and practices of its members. David Nygaard Fine Jewelers is proud to display the AGS emblem.
Be aware of the credentials of the "experts." Below are several titles often used and sometimes misused, which you should be aware.
Certified Gemologist, Certified Gemologist Appraiser. The CG or Certified Gemologist is perhaps the most misused title in our industry. It is a trademark of the American Gem Society and can only be used by a member. The title recognizes an individual who is a Graduate Gemologist, GIA, and who has completed the AGS Way course, which addresses more fully guidelines on diamond cutting, among other things. The CGA has also completed basic training in jewelry valuation generally for the purposes of insurance appraising. A CGA must also have an accredited gem lab, because it is just as important to have the equipment to grade and evaluate diamonds as it is to have the training. Training does little good without the proper equipment to assign a proper grade.
