Accredited Senior Appraiser and Master Gemologist Appraiser are titles of the American Society of Appraisers, the only jewelry appraisal organization which is part of the Appraisal Foundation, and recognized by congress. To qualify requires extensive training and both in residence classes as well as correspondence courses in gemology and valuation science.
All must meet extremely high ethical standards and require re- certification and ongoing education. A Master Gemologist Appraiser must also have an accredited gem lab as well as have his/her color vision tested regularly. The proper equipment and training alone do not guarantee accurate diamond grading, if the appraiser is colorblind. A color vision test ensures the appraiser is truly qualified. These are the most difficult titles to attain.
To date, Virginia does not require state certification for Personal Property Appraisers. Any one can therefore set themselves up as an appraiser of jewelry. Though the state does not require licensing, having a qualified appraiser can be crucial in obtaining the proper amount of insurance or a proper "like kind" replacement under an insurance policy.
